How the Golden State Advantage Card Helps Families

The Golden State Advantage (GSA) card is an electronic benefits card designed to assist millions of families with household expenses.


It functions like a debit or credit card and is used to access food assistance benefits, commonly known as CalFresh in California.
 

How to Apply for the Golden State Advantage Card

Interested individuals can apply through the following methods:

Once approved, recipients receive their GSA (CalFresh) card by mail and can start using it immediately at participating retailers.
 

Where Can You Use the GSA or CalFresh Card?

The card is primarily used for purchasing food items at:

  • Grocery stores and supermarkets

  • Certain participating restaurants (for elderly, disabled, or homeless individuals)

  • Farmers’ markets and select retail food stores

What Can You Buy with a GSA or CalFresh Card?

Eligible food purchases include:

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Meat, poultry, and fish

Restricted Purchases with the GSA or CalFresh Card

The Golden State Advantage card cannot be used to buy:

  • Alcohol or tobacco products

  • Vitamins or supplements

  • Live animals

  • Hot prepared foods

  • Non-food household items

Holders of a CalFresh card may qualify for:

  • Discounted or free admission to museums, theme parks, zoos, and aquariums

  • Additional food assistance programs

Managing Your Benefits

  • Monthly Deposits: Funds are credited within the first 10 days of each month.

  • Checking Balance: Users can check their balance through EBT customer service or online portals.
